The year 2016 began with a bang for India, especially considering they conceded over 400 runs in their last One-Day International for 2015. The fact that the Indian bowlers have now conceded 748 runs for nine wickets (at 83.11 runs a wicket) in 99.2 overs (at 7.53 runs an over) is a major cause of worry. But the 300-plus score in the very first ODI of the year was a good sign – at least that was what most people would have thought at the halfway mark of India’s first ODI on their tour of Australia.

Rohit Sharma’s big hitting in Perth on Tuesday (January 12) and Virat Kohli’s steady support were the hallmarks of the Indian innings. Australia began badly but a captain’s knock from Steven Smith, who was ably supported by George Bailey saw Australia through the crucial middle overs and eventually the game was won quite easily by the hosts. With 200-plus stands recorded by both sides, it was the first time in ODI history that there were two 200-plus partnership in the same match.

A run feast is always a statistical delight. Given below are some of the records broken and set during this game.

** Barinder Sran is the 207th player to appear in ODIs for India. Last year, Manish Pandey was the only Indian to make his ODI debut in 2015, while in 2014 six Indians made their debut in the format.

** Scott Boland and Joel Paris became the 210th and 211st players to make their ODI debut for Australia.

Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 171 set up several firsts in ODIs as shown in the tables below, among other records and dubious feats.
