Saroja Swamy, Anil Kumble’s mother, passed away early on Monday (February 1). She was 73.
To cricket fans, the abiding memory of her would be from the 1996 Titan Cup game between India and Australia in Bangalore. Australia had posted 215 for 7, thanks to Mark Taylor’s hundred, and India had slipped to 164 for 8 in their chase. With eight overs to go, Kumble and Javagal Srinath were at the crease. Victory looked unlikely and the crowd was dejected. But some smart running and big shots from the two ensured a memorable victory with seven balls to spare. The crowd was in raptures, not least of all Kumble’s mother, who was watching from the stands along with Srinath’s family.
She was also by Kumble’s side when he announced his retirement from One-Day International cricket in 2007.
She had lost her husband, KN Krishnaswamy, in 2003, and is survived by sons Anil and Dinesh Kumble.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association members were among those mourning her death.
