PROFILE

Despite a century on debut against Sri Lanka in 2010, Suresh Raina’s Test career didn’t take off, with pace bowlers exploiting his vulnerability to the short ball. When Raina returned to the Test team after a gap of 28 months against Australia in Sydney in January 2015, he registered a pair. All that however has not done any harm to his exceptional limited-overs career, both for India and Chennai Super Kings, for whom he has appeared in all their 139 games so far. Armed with greater freedom in shorter formats, Raina has developed into a batsman with supreme match-awareness. His canny offspin and outstanding fielding complete the package, and he has become a stellar figure who has invariably delivered the goods for MS Dhoni. A clean striker of the ball, Raina’s greatest strength has been an uninhibited, fearless tendency to take the aerial route, with the drive over cover and a lofted pull-hoick over wide mid-wicket his signature shots. That he can combine beefy blows with sparkling running between the wickets further strengthens his credentials as a limited-over batsman, and nowhere was his ability on display better than the match-winning century against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 Champions League final. A World Cup winner, Raina has captained India in 12 ODIs and three T20Is.
