PROFILE

A promising middle-order bat, Suryakumar Yadav made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai against Delhi in late 2010 with an immediate impact: he was top-scorer in the first innings with 73 while no other Mumbai batsman crossed 40. Further confirmation of his talent came when he was awarded the MA Chidambaram Trophy for best Under-22 cricketer by the BCCI for the 2010-11 season. Consistent domestic performances followed, with the high point a superb 200 against Orissa in November 2011 on a newly laid wicket at Cuttack. Yadav also had his first brush with controversy – though not of his own making – a month before, when scored an unbeaten 182 in an Under-22 tournament in Mumbai. It was as good a performance as any, except that Yadav had been reported ‘injured’ by Mumbai Indians for the ongoing Champions League, which led to them being eligible to field five foreign players in their playing eleven. After that knock, he was soon declared as having recovered, and re-joined Mumbai for the semi-final and final.
