South Africa Under 19 claimed the three-match youth ODI series against Sri Lanka Under 19 with a game to spare, after recording a 49-run win at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Friday.
Sri Lanka Under 19 did well to restrict South Africa Under 19 to a score of 220 for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs, thanks to a four-wicket haul for Nipun Ransika. Matthew Breetzke (68) and Raynard van Tonder (61) scored half centuries for the home team.
Early wickets however scuppered Sri Lanka Under 19’s run chase, losing their first four wickets for 51 runs. A fifth-wicket partnership between Mishen Silva and Hasitha Boyagoda gave the visiting team some hope, but after the latter was run out, and Silva was dismissed two overs later, Sri Lanka Under 19 were left reeling at 93 for six. A seventh wicket stand between Ashen Bandara and Rashmika Dilshan of 41 runs followed, which was Sri Lanka Under 19’s best in the innings, but with Dilshan’s wicket with the score on 134 the visitors lost any chance of a series-levelling win, eventually being bowled out for 141 in the 45th over.
Opener Vishwa Chathuranga top scored with 40 and Bandara was the last man out for 39. Ruan de Swardt was the best of South Africa Under 19’s bowlers taking 3 for 38.
